Development comes
to Sumbu:
The Zambian Government has during
the course of 2010 and 2011 begun a programme designed to boost the
Tourism sector in Northern Zambia. The programme is officially
titled the Kasaba Bay Tourism Development Project but has wider
implications than Kasaba Bay only. 3 major components are nearing
completion and will be done by mid 2011.
A 66 kv electricity line has been
brought in from Mbala to provide mains electricity to Ndole Bay
Lodge, Kasaba Bay airport, government offices in Sumbu and
surrounding industry in the area. The line was commissioned on the
12 of April 2011.
The airstrip at Kasaba Bay is
undergoing a major overhaul, being lengthened to 2700m of level
tarmac and resurfaced. The aim is to designate the new airport as an
International airport by the end of 2011 with the associated
customs, immigration and aviation authorities on site. This
corresponds with the privatisation of a large concession on the
North of Sumbu National Park where a triplex lodge and tourism
facility is to be built.
The last major development is the
opening of the access road from Mbala to Kasaba/Sumbu/Ndole Bay. It
will include a new bridge over the eastern park boundary and Lufubu
rivers giving Sumbu National Park more direct access to the great
North Road.
3D COMES TO
TANGANYIKA!!
In June 2010
a film crew for KBS visited Lake Tanganyika as part of their
production on Africa’s great waters. All filming was done using 3D
HD cameras. Ndole Bay Lodge undertook all logistics for the western
part of the Lake. Unbelievable footage was taken over their 21 days
on the Lake much of it never before captured on film. Highlights
included filming African Lungfish underwater, Cichlid parental
behaviours and the first time ever the Nundo Head traditional
ceremony has been filmed.
Craig assisted on all underwater filming
and after lifting the 150kg 3D camera out of the water for a week
was given the unofficial title of assistant number 1!! Look out for
any new 3D documentaries in 2011 featuring Tanganyika, they were
most likely filmed right here.
Conservation
With the
cooperation of the Zambia National Fishing Competition and its
competitors, Ndole Bay lodge has built a custom designed craft
fitted with a 60HP engine that will be used in conservation efforts
to combat illegal fishing. The boat has been named “Sokonto”meaning
Tigerfish in the local language. There were also donations of fuel
by the competitors of the fishing competition for ongoing
operations.
